Formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2001 by Bradford Cox (1982, Athens, Georgia, USA; vocals) and Moses Archuleta (keyboards), the early line-up of this US art punk band also featured Justin Bosworth (b. 1980, d. 2004; bass) and Dan Walton (drums). Guitarist Colin Mee quickly replaced the latter, and with Archuleta doubling on drums the quartet recorded a split 7-inch vinyl single with Alphabets. Before the single could be released, however, Bosworth died in a skating accident and was replaced by Josh Fauver. The new line-up completed Turn It Up Faggot, a fractious, uneven dance punk recording that provided an apt summary of the combustible bands live performances at the time. New member Lockett Pundts accomplished guitar work was featured to good effect on the follow-up, Cryptograms. Released at the start of 2007, the album was a notably more introverted release than the debut, with subtle ambient textures emboldening the bands post-punk posturing. Following the release of the excellent Fluorescent Grey EP in the summer, guitarist Mee temporarily left the band but returned to the line-up for the bands European tour. Deerhunter then announced a temporary hiatus at the end of the year. Cox released a solo album under the Atlas Sound moniker in February 2008.
