21 November 1941, Memphis, Tennessee, USA. Although better recalled for his partnership with Isaac Hayes, Porter had been an active, if unsuccessful, performer prior to their meeting, recording for several labels including Savoy Records and Hi Records. The singer was also present on several early Stax Records sessions. Porter first encountered his future colleague when he tried to sell Hayes life insurance, but the pair soon combined in one of the 60s soul era’s most electric songwriting teams. Rightly applauded for their songs for Sam And Dave, including ‘Hold On I’m Comin’’, ‘Soul Man’ and ‘When Something Is Wrong With My Baby’, the duo also provided hits for Carla Thomas (‘B-A-B-Y’) and Johnnie Taylor (‘I Had A Dream’). Their friendship was strained when Hayes secured an international bestseller with his Hot Buttered Soul. Porter then relaunched his solo career and in 1970 had a Top 30 US R&B hit with ‘Can’t See You When I Want To’. His only other chart entry came in 1972 when ‘Ain’t That Loving You (For More Reasons Than One)’ was a minor success. Credited to ‘Isaac Hayes And David Porter’, it ostensibly marked the end of their collaboration.
