Dark Funeral / VON (Metal) Biography

An intense Swedish black metal band, Dark Funeral was formed in 1993 by Lord Ahriman (guitar), Blackmoon (guitar), Themgoroth (bass/vocals) and Draugen (drums). A demo EP led to a contract with No Fashion and The Secrets Of The Black Arts appeared in 1996, featuring new drummer Equimanthorn. A reputation began to grow, based on shows featuring fire-breathing, fountains of fake blood and the band throwing pigs’ heads into the crowd. Personnel shuffles led to a new line-up of Lord Ahriman plus Emperor Magus Caligula (bass/vocals), Alzazmon (drums) and Thyphos (guitar). International tours with Cannibal Corpse and Infernal Majesty, plus recording with the esteemed Swedish metal producers Peter and Tommy Tägtgren, saw Dark Funeral rise to the top of the black metal pack, where they remain a powerful live draw. Further line-up changes saw Dominion (guitar) and Gaahnfaust (drums) making their debuts on 2000’s cover versions EP Teach Children To Worship Satan, and Matte Modin taking over as the drummer on the following year’s Diabolis Interium.
