Cold Blood Biography

A popular live attraction in their native San Francisco, Cold Blood featured the powerful, bluesy voice of Lydia Pense and echoed the hard, brassy sound of Tower Of Power. Formed in 1968, the group - Larry Field (guitar), Paul Matute (keyboards), Danny Hull (saxophone), Jerry Jonutz (saxophone), David Padron (trumpet), Larry Jonutz (trumpet), Paul Ellicot (bass), Frank J. David (drums), plus Pense - was signed to impresario Bill Graham's San Francisco label Fillmore the following year. Two albums resulted from this relationship before the group moved to Reprise Records. Later releases failed to recapture the gritty quality of those early records, although their final album was produced by guitarist Steve Cropper. Most of the group then dropped out from active performing, but a late-period drummer, Gaylord Birch, later worked with Santana, the Pointer Sisters and Graham Central Station.
