Calla Biography

This Brooklyn, New York, USA-based experimental rock outfit was formed in 1997 by Aurelio Valle (Texas, USA; guitar, vocals), Wayne B. Magruder (b. Texas, USA; percussion, programming), and classically trained composer Sean Donovan (b. Texas, USA; keyboards, bass, programming). Valle and Magruder played together in indie rock band the Factory Press, while Magruder and Donovan previously collaborated together as the electro-acoustic duo Fallen Vlods. Magruder also worked as a session drummer with Bowery Electric, Main, and Windsor For The Derby. The trio's initial recordings under the Calla moniker were based primarily around sampling and programming, with their 1999 debut for the Brussels, Belgium-based Sub Rosa label marking them out as one of the most promising new experimental rock acts of the year. A new recording contract with Michael Gira's Young God label marked a change in direction for Calla, with ongoing live work introducing a more formal approach to their music. Scavengers retained the hypnotic minimalism of their debut, but ditched the obtuse electronics to reveal a new-found melodic gift to complement Valle's under-articulated vocals and Donovan's subterranean bass.
