Washington, DC, Maryland, USA. One of rap’s woefully inadequate types, BG, the self-proclaimed Prince Of Rap, specialized in empty rhetoric. An ex-GI based in Germany, whom one reviewer unkindly renamed the ‘Prince Of Wack’. Conversely, Columbia Records introduced him as the ‘most exciting dance/rap act to emerge from Germany since Snap!’, which gave some indication of his style and of the record company’s marketing gambit. BG was involved in Washington’s go-go movement until he was introduced, via an army colleague, into the world of hip-hop. When his regiment moved to Germany he took part in local rapping competitions there, until he came to the attention of producer Jam El Mar, of Jam And Spoon fame. The resulting ‘Rap To The World’ single was a major hit in German clubs during 1992, and its follow-up, ‘This Beat Is Hot’, made it into that country’s Top 20.
