Andrew Gold Biography

2 August 1951, Burbank, California, USA. This accomplished guitarist/vocalist/keyboard player was the son of two notable musicians. His father, Ernest Gold, composed several film scores, including Exodus, while his mother, Marni Nixon, provided the off-screen singing voice for actors Audrey Hepburn and Natalie Wood in My Fair Lady and West Side Story, respectively. Andrew Gold first drew attention as a member of Los Angeles-based acts, The Fraternal Order Of The All, Bryndle and the Rangers. Both groups also featured guitarist Kenny Edwards, formerly of the Stone Poneys, and the pair subsequently pursued their careers as part of Linda Ronstadt's backing group. Gold's skills as a musician and arranger contributed greatly to several of her releases, including Prisoner In Disguise and Hasten Down The Wind, while sessions for Carly Simon, Art Garfunkel and Loudon Wainwright were also undertaken. Gold completed his solo debut in 1975 and the following year he enjoyed a transatlantic hit with "Lonely Boy". A follow-up single, "Never Let Her Slip Away", reached number 5 in the UK, while other chart entries included "How Can This Be Love" and "Thank You For Being A Friend". However the artist was unable to circumvent an increasingly sterile sound and was dropped by his label in the wake of the disappointing Whirlwind.

Gold continued to tour with Ronstadt as part of her back-up band before forming Wax with Graham Gouldman in 1986. In 1992 Undercover had a UK number 5 hit with a club version of "Never Let Her Slip Away". Gold concentrated on Nashville session work in the 90s, and wrote Wynonna's number 1 US country hit "I Saw The Light'. 2000"s The Spence Manor Suite was his first full-blown country album.
